Bringing human milk banking forward: New breast pumps for donor mothers in Uganda

EFCNI is delighted to share the inspiring news of a generous donation that will make a meaningful impact on neonatal health in Uganda. In response to a request from the ATTA Breastmilk Community, our long-standing corporate partner Prolacta Bioscience has donated five breast pumps to support breastfeeding and human milk donation.

The ATTA Breastmilk Community, a dedicated organisation within EFCNI’s network, plays a crucial role in promoting human milk donation in Uganda. As part of their work, they provide breast pumps to mothers with excess milk and occasionally to bereaved mothers who wish to donate their milk but lack the necessary equipment. The new pumps will help ensure that donor mothers can contribute their milk more easily, supporting vulnerable infants who rely on life-saving human milk.

Rachael Akugizibwe, Operations Officer at the ATTA Breastmilk Community, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation:

“On behalf of the ATTA Breastmilk Community, I want to express our heartfelt gratitude to Prolacta for the generous donation of these breast pumps and EFCNI for raising awareness of the need. These pumps are more than just equipment; they are a lifeline for mothers and fragile newborns. They will empower donor mothers who wish to share their milk but lack the necessary tools. Thanks to your generosity that brings us closer to creating a community-led model for human milk banking in Africa. We are deeply grateful for your partnership and commitment to maternal and neonatal health.”

Prolacta Bioscience, a leader in providing 100% human milk–based nutritional products for preterm infants, was honoured to support this initiative. The company’s commitment to advancing neonatal care extends beyond hospital settings, as demonstrated by this meaningful contribution.

“Supporting organizations which promote the clinical benefits of human milk feeds – especially for preterm and critically ill babies – has always been paramount to Prolacta. That is why we were so honored to help the efforts in Uganda of the ATTA Breastmilk Community and the Alyssa Marie Foundation by supplying refurbished breast milk pumps. We appreciate their dedication to helping the most vulnerable babies,” said Sven Maenhout, Commercial Director Europe, Prolacta Bioscience.

At EFCNI, we believe in the power of collaboration to drive meaningful change. We are grateful to Prolacta Bioscience for their generosity and to the ATTA Breastmilk Community for their dedication to human milk banking in Africa. Together, we can ensure that more preterm and sick babies receive the life-saving benefits of human milk.
