Empowering collaboration: Parents and experts discussing the future of neonatal care in Switzerland

Guest article by Dina Hediger, Founder and CEO of “Frühchen & Neokinder Schweiz” (“Preemies and NICU kids Switzerland”).

The parent organisation “Frühchen & Neokinder Schweiz” held its second specialist conference in November, bringing together an interdisciplinary team of experts, parents, and neonatologists. The team includes professionals such as neonatologists, a gynaecologist, a midwife, nurses, and specialists in lactation, music therapy, speech therapy, psychology, social work, and pastoral care, as well as parents.

The morning featured parents sharing their experiences and a keynote lecture by Professor Dr. Heiko Reutter on nutrition for preterm infants. In afternoon workshops, small groups of parents and professionals from hospitals across Switzerland discussed several key topics: which tasks parents are already allowed to take on in neonatology units, which tasks they should take on in the future, and the challenges associated with these responsibilities.

The interdisciplinary conference and the discussions about the roles of parents in neonatology were highly valued. Numerous inspirations and ideas for improving neonatology were taken away from the event. The exchange with parents and across different hospitals is so valuable and important, as it allows everyone to learn from one another and fosters a sense of collaboration. “Frühchen & Neokinder Schweiz” is proud of the innovative ideas born from these discussions and looks forward to continued teamwork with parents and professionals.
