PREMSTEM Conference: Research into Neonatal Brain Repair

  • Date: 13 – 15 May 2025
  • Location: Barcelona, Spain, or online
  • About: PREMSTEM is tackling the topic of mesenchymal stem cells as a potential treatment for brain injury related to preterm birth. After 5.5 years of dedicated research, the consortium invites you to hear their achievements.

Conference highlights

  • Keynote address and scientific sessions: Hear about PREMSTEM’s findings, future applications of the research, and alternatives to stem cells. There will also be a discussion about how and why you should include stakeholders, such as parents, in this field of research.
  • Engage with experts: Network with researchers in the field of neonatology, medical professionals, and parent and patient representatives.
  • Flexible attendance: Join us in person or via live streaming.

Keynote speaker

Associate Professor Atul Malhotra, a senior neonatologist at Monash Children’s Hospital, and a research academic in the Department of Paediatrics at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia will talk about his experience of bringing a stem cell-based therapy to the clinic: the pitfalls, the lessons learned and the successes during his keynote address. Atul is the Principal Investigator of three ongoing umbilical cord blood-derived cell therapy trials.

Session topics

  • Novel and innovative approaches to screening
  • Using large animal translational models and how to do it better
  • In vitro studies of stem cell activities
  • Cell based therapies in animal studies
  • Imaging modalities
  • Alternatives and adjuncts to stem cells (extracellular vesicles)
  • From pre-clinical work to an approved therapy
  • Learnings from co-creation: involving external stakeholders in research
